Song 14: The Phantom Confronts Christine

The Story: 

Well the Beauty Underneath ends with the Phantom showing Gustave his face, and Gustave runs away screaming. In this scene Gustave tells Christine "it's horrible!" and as she calms him we hear the Phantom's voice and he appears on stage again. Then he confronts Christine and he asks her that she really thought she could hide the fact that Gustave was his son from him. He asks for the truth and Christine sends Gustave off with Meg. Christine then tells the Phantom what really happened.

Why we think it rocks: 

• I gotta admit that I got a lot of emotion from this scene. What I liked was that in the beginning when the Phantom asked Christine for the truth and she told him about Gustave being their son and all, was that the confirmation still shook him. He had suspected and maybe even known deep down that it was true, yet when he heard it from Christine it shook him.
• Christine sings "once upon another time" and then a while later "once upon that other time" it's kinda amusing for me how they refer to what really happened that night. It just comes to show that even the most famous and best opera singers have some shyness in them right? ;-)
• It's really sad, yet sweet, for me that when they sing "just love"/ "a son" how the Phantom is on his knees, almost crying. It shows us just how much he really cares for Gustave, and when he later sings "forgive me" and "he shuns me" it makes you take pity on the poor guy!
  I think that all in all it was a good scene, a bit short, but really sweet and kinda sad. This is one of the few scenes that makes me take pity on the Phantom.

Hey guys! Yes you have read right it's an actual post by the LLLND Committee! We cannot apologize enough for not blogging in months! I guess time caught up a bit and we didn't take it so well! We are going to try our best to start blogging again and keep it up!
To all the fans and supporters that we lost, we hope you come back, and for those who stayed with us thank you so much and we won't disappoint you!

Hello there, everyone! Guess what? It's today the whole day Ramin Karimloo's birthday! For those of you who didn't know, Ramin played The Phantom in the 25th Anniversary Edition of  The Phantom of the Opera, The Phantom in the London Production if Love Never Dies and made an appearance as Christine's father in the 2004 movie of  The Phantom of the Opera! So happy birthday Ramin and may you have a wonderful day!

The Story:

Creepy!

The Phantom realizes something is not quite right and decides to show Gustave his world. The Phantom does this and tries to confirm his suspicions; can Gustave really be his son? I think the Phantom did this to prepare Gustave, if Gustave was his son, for the ultimate...um...surprise. He would reveal his face to Gustave. (Please excuse me for the photo festival. I just had to take a lot to emphasize on the art and decoration being a job well done!)

 Why we think it rocks!:

The return of the evil skeleton thingy

1. 1. I had to BEG GreekGirl to let me do this post because this must be my all time favorite song! She did let me do it but on the one condition that she does "Devil Take the Hindmost".
2.  2. What doesn't rock in this song?! Seriously, what doesn't? This epic number performed by The Phantom and Gustave is certainly something different when it comes to musicals. I can remember seeing the film and giving my stepsister this "What the hell?" look when the guitars came on (unfortunately she didn't see me, she was transfixed to the screen). Is this supposed to be a musical or a rock concert? I thought. The answer was: both and at the end it totally rocked!
3.  3. This might have been one of the only sets where the designers were given permission to let their imaginations run free. While watching this song I saw stuff that not even my wildest dreams could come up with (and believe me, I have some pretty wild dreams...). I saw something that looks like a bird-thing skeleton attacking a human skeleton, some bald little kids, a fairy, a mermaid, a dude with long nails, a dude with and extra eye and one with a lot of extra arms. I saw the little (now big) cymbal-playing monkey being pulled by a guy riding a HUGE bicycle in a pinstripe suit. All and all, the scenery was awesome.
4. What amazes me of this scene is how quickly the scene can change. First it was Fleck, Gangle and Squelch playing on the piano, then it changed to a group of weirdly dressed people. Suddenly the children, a woman clothed in white and the monkey with the cycle-dude entered and the others disappeared. After a while they faded away and the pyramid shaped cases lit up to reveal the fairy, the mermaid, the guy with the nails, the all-seeing guy and the octopus guy along with the skeleton creation. It actually took ma a while to realize that the decoration was divided into sections. Very cleverly done.
5. After reading a few posts I saw that the main thing they all complained about was that this rockish number is similar to the title song in POTO and that it served the same purpose. So what? It was something new and original to put some kick in the musical/opera. Who cares if The Phantom likes to go all out when showing someone his lair? Everyone likes to make a good first impression, don't you?
6. Even if some people didn't like the musical that much, they all agreed that "The Beauty Underneath" was the best song of them all.

Character 1: The Phantom

Hey guys! Okay...from now on I'll be telling you some more about the characters, about 1 per week, but when it goes busy you have to excuse us!

The first character is obviously the Phantom.

Where to begin! There are lots to say about him!

Here goes.

So I did a little research, and found out that the meaning of "phantom" is "an appearance or illusion without material substance, as a dream image, mirage, or optical illusion." ( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/phantom?s=t )

Well the thing I like best about the Phantom that he's got different sides. Like sometimes he's so in love with Christine that he goes all mushy and organizes "beneath a moonless sky" evenings, and the next thing you know, he's killing people left, right and center.
You know, I think that all the bad things our Friend did, were motivated by love. And that is so sweet, especially for a Phantom.

I have watched both POTO and LND a lot of times, and I realized that the Phantom...he hurts inside. Constantly.
Even when he's with Christine, he hurts inside, yearning for things to be alright. I think that in POTO he already knew that he would never have Christine; because of Raoul, always being better and richer than our Phantom, always being able to please Christine, and what could the Phantom do?
He could kill people to prove his love to Christine, but that isn't very romantic.

We later find out in LND that the Opera house had burnt down and that everyone had thought the Phantom dead. I'm not sure, but I think that the Phantom started the fire, and he ran away, because it hurt him to much to love Christine and never have her.
He had to love her a whole lot to do that!
The first song, Till I hear you sing, actually tells us that the Phantom had hoped for years that his true love would find him again, even though he thought it would never happen.
And then it does!
Christine finds him, but with....*drumroll*...... Raoul!
So our disfigured friend is happy yet sad, because of Raoul.
I think the urge in the Phantom to kill Raoul and take Christine was so big, and I'm really surprised that he didn't.
We all love the Phantom, who couldn't?
Even though he might be bit disfigured, he's still awesome. He did all those bad things to get Christine, and it breaks my heart to see him yearning for her.
When he finally thinks he has her; Raoul is gone, she's free, she loves him, she dies. That has got be the saddest love story ever.
Not Romeo and Juliet, Titanic or Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy can beat the Phantom's love for Christine. Not for me, anyway.

If you haven't watched LND yet, or if you are planning on, just remember the tissues.

So in conclusion, I would like to compare THE PHANTOM to ANAKIN SKYWALKER/ DARTH VADER.

Both of them are misunderstood, and they're both bad....evil because of love. I recently watched Star Wars, and Anakin turned so bad and evil, all because he wanted to keep his one true love from dying.

The Phantom is almost the same. He commits these gruesome crimes, and he is evil deep down, but that is because he loves Christine.

All in all, I feel sorry for the Phantom, but we still love him!
